ARE WE THERE YET?

October 2009

By Ruth Randall

SWC correspondent for multi-cultural, multi-racial issues

The inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama as the forty-fourth president of the United States was symbolic of the great strides our country has made in its journey towards the eradication of racism. Many folks believe that the presence of a black man in the White House is evidence of the fact that we have completed the journey. Let us examine that idea.

A popular radio talk show host seems to delight in referring to President Obama as Barack the magic Negro and as a hafrican American.
In April of this year, three professors and a former professor at Columbia University’s Teachers College received hate mail that contained images of swastikas. Read article
Charles Bolden, a black man, was appointed by President Obama as Administrator of the National Air and Space Administration ((NASA) on May 24th.
The Shack, a book that depicts God as a big black woman working in a kitchen is widely used by Christian discussion groups. Some theologians consider the book to be groundbreaking while others believe that its teachings are heresy. The fact that the negative stereotypical image of a big black woman working in the kitchen speaking in stereotypical black dialect, which conjures up the image of Aunt Jemima, apparently escapes the sensitivities of seemingly good “Christians”.
Sonia Sotomayor, a Latina/Hispanic was nominated by President Obama as a justice to the Supreme Court. May 26, 2009
Television and radio talk show hosts, including convicted felon, G. Gordon Liddy, began an all out assault on Sotomayor’s race, gender and intelligence. Liddy questioned the impact of her hormones on her decision-making abilities.  Read article
Karl Rove a college dropout questioned the intellectual capacity of Supreme Court Nominee Sonia Sotomayor, who graduated suma cum laude from Princeton University. Read article
An ad placed for a mechanic by an Albuquerque auto shop listed among its qualifications “no chile peelers” (Hmm “chile peelers” is that code for people of Hispanic/Latino descent?) Read article
On June 3, 2009, a former secretary and former case manager for retired US District Judge Samuel B. Kent reported to Congress that the judge routinely used the “N” word when referring to defendants of African descent.
On June 17, 2009, an eighteen-year old Caucasian male was sentenced to ten days in jail for putting a noose around the neck of a Hispanic boy and dragging him from a sidewalk to a parking lot.
Sixty-five black and Hispanic children, members of the Creative Steps camp in northeast Philadelphia, were asked not to return to a private swimming pool at a predominantly white private club in Philadelphia. The club refunded the $1950.00 paid by Creative Steps for the children to swim there without explanation. When questioned about the incident, the club president stated that there was concern that the children would “change the complexion and atmosphere” of the club. Read article
June 9, 2009, was the beginning of a series of beatings of homeless Native American males in Grants, New Mexico.
On July twentieth of this year, Harvard professor, Henry Louis Gates was handcuffed and carted off to jail for breaking into his own house. Never mind that Professor Gates produced two forms of photo identification to the arresting officers before the arrest took place.

The many obstacles that have been successfully overcome on the road to racial justice coupled with the deep valleys of evil encountered on the journey begs the question -  Are We There Yet?
